الملخص

ABSTRACT This study aims at investigating differences in linguistic structure and meaning between two English registers: academic text and conversation. The study is limited to the investigation of the differences at the level of embedded phrases and clauses. This study depends on analyzing twenty academic texts and twenty conversations in terms of different types of subordinate embedded phrases and clauses, their positions in a sentence as well as the different sub-types of phrases and clauses. The results of the analysis showed some significant differences between the two registers in their use of embedded phrases and clauses, their different forms and their different positions. An attempt is made to relate these linguistic differences between registers to differences in the contextual features of the two registers investigated. This study consists of six chapters. Chapter one discusses the aims of the study. Chapter two reviews some of the theoretical and empirical studies on register. Chapter three describes the methodology of the study. Chapter four is concerned with method and procedure of analysis. Chapter five presents the results of the analysis and explains them. The main findings of the study are summarized in chapter six. Some pedagogical implications and suggestions for further studies are also discussed in this chapter.
