Abstract

Shadows of Immigration: The Crisis of Indian Female Identity in Selected Works of Bharati Mukherjee"" is a thesis that sheds light on the phenomenon of immigration in the twentieth century and observes the immigrants' experiences as represented in the works of the Indian-American writer Bharati Mukherjee. One major goal is to investigate her vacillation between the admiration of the western culture and her rejection of the Indian one; the matter that resulted in a serious crisis about the originality of her identity. Another purpose is connected with her depiction of the lives of immigrants and their strategies to adapt with their new world. Issues of racism, manwoman relationship, self-fulfillment and sentimental and physical attachments to homelands are highlighted. The authoress' opinions towards both the new world and her country of origins are analyzed through her works, articles and some interviews....
