Abstract

Abstract This paper aims at examining the difference between semantic and communicative translations as applied, by adapting the six translation procedures proposed by Newmark, on twenty eight selected metaphorical Hadiths. These Hadiths are collected from three authentic sources: Riyadh-us-Saliheen" (the version translated by Amin and Razduq) , "Sahih Al-Bukhari" (the version translated by Muhammad Khan), and the book of "Al-Majazat Al-Nabawayah"; an original book (not translated) which includes a considerable number of metaphorical Hadiths. The purpose of this examination is to determine which of the two approaches is more successful in the translation of metaphorical Hadiths. The application of the two approaches revealed that the decision depends on factors related to the metaphor itself and others related to the context in which it occurs.
